  1. Introducciones - Introductions

Don't worry about "being wrong" on any of these assignments because when learning a new language, you have to feel comfortable in making mistakes. Look at the assignments as practice, and my instructors and coaches always told me - PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!

In the upcoming weeks, we will learn the break down on how to answer questions like the ones in our first discussion post, as well as the who, what, when, where, why, and how to use it. Alright, now let's get started.

Instrucciones - Instructions

Using the word bank and example below, please answer the following questions in the form below:

What is your name?

Where are you from?

How old are you?

What is one thing you love?

Word Bank:

Mi nombre es... Me encanta... Vivo en... Tengo __ años.

My name is... I love... I live in... I am __ years old.

Example:

"Hola. Mi nombre es Sra. Speller. Vivo en Daytona Beach, FL. Tengo 28 años. Me encanta bailar."

2. El Alfabeto - The Alphabet

El Alfabeto/Abecedario or the Spanish alphabet is different from the English alphabet because of the four additional letters: CHLL, Ñ, and RR. Use the alphabet worksheet to assist you in familiarizing yourself with each letter as well as practicing pronunciation.

Remember: ¡La Práctica hace la Perfección! - Practice makes Perfect!

3. Los numeros - The Numbers

This práctica will cover what the numbers are in Spanish and shortcuts for learning them. The worksheet identifies the first 99 numbers. Please refer to the breakdown below and familiarize yourself with tricks that will help remember them.

  1. Learn the numbers for 1-15. There's no real pattern, you just have to learn them: uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez, once, doce, trece, catorce, quince.

  2. Learn the numbers for the multiples of ten: veinte, treinta, cuarenta, cincuenta, sesenta, setenta, ochenta, noventa. A few tips to help you remember:

- Other than veinte, they all end in -enta

- Other than veinte (again), they all have a clear relationship with the related smaller number: cuatro <- > cuarenta, ocho <-> ochenta, etc.

Once you've memorized the above, you can fill in the gaps with a simple formula:

·     For numbers from 16-19, take the rightmost digit and say “diez + y + (digit)”. E.g. 17 = “diez + y + siete” = “diez y siete”, which contracts to diecisiete. This is much like how in English 16 is “six-ten” i.e. “sixteen”.

·     For numbers above twenty, simply take the “tens” number (veinte, treinta, etc.) and the “ones” number (uno, dos, tres, etc.) and stick “y” (“and”) in the middle. E.g. 31 = “thirty and one” = treinta y uno. 98 = “ninety and eight” = noventa y ocho.

·     The only extra thing to be aware of is that numbers from 21-29 get contracted into a single word – so instead of “veinte y cuatro”, it's “veinticuatro”.

Finally, don’t forget that:

·     zero = cero (this one should be easy to remember!)

·     100 = cien (note the link with English words like “century”, “centipede”, or “percent“.)

With these simple steps, you’ll have the numbers 1-100 memorized in no time.

4. Numero de Telefono - Telephone Number

Now that you are familiar with Spanish numbers, this práctica will be to tell the class and myself, what is your telephone number, starting with the area code. You can provide your response in the comments section below and it must include words and no numerical digits. I have provided you an example below. Make sure you start with, "Mi numero de telefono es el..." which means, "My telephone number is...".

"Mi numero de telefono es el, tres dos uno, tres uno dos, setenta y siete setenta y uno." - My telephone number is, three two one, three one two, seventy seven, seventy one.

¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono? - What is your telephone number?

5. Los colores - The colors

Los colores - The colors, are probably one of the groups of words that you will use most frequently when speaking Spanish. You will use them to describe just about anything and you will be surprised how often knowing the colors in Spanish is required. Here are some of the most basic Spanish colors to get you started.

  • Anaranjado - Orange

  • Amarillo - Yellow

  • Azul - Blue

  • Rojo - Red

  • Verde - Green

  • Negro - Black

  • Marrón, Café - Brown

  • Rosado - Pink

  • Morado - Purple

  • Blanco - White

Using the beginning phrases in bold below in order to create a sentence, this práctica will assist in describing any noun in color. Use the section BELOW to finish the sentences below.

Mi color favorito es... My favorite color is...

El color de mi casa es... The color of my house is..

El color de mi cabello es... The color of my hair is..

El color de mis ojos son... The color of my eyes are..

El color de mis zapatos es... The color of my shoes are...

6. Ponlo Todo Junto - Put It Altogether

Using the "Subject Pronoun Conjugation" and the "Basic Nouns Masculine/Feminine" charts, let's use this práctica to construct some sentences. I will ask you five questions and you are to respond using your knowledge about el alfabeto, los numeros, and los colores to answer.

¿Cuántos años tiene tu abuela?

¿Cuál es el color favorito de tu abuelo?

¿De qué color son los ojos de tu abuela?

¿Cuantos años tienes?

¿Prefieres las montañas o la playa?

If the word is purple in the question, that means you will utilize the same exact word in your response. If the word is green in the question, that means you will change the conjugation of the word. Please see the example below:

¿De qué color son los ojos de tu abuelo?

Los ojos de mi abuelo son negros.

Remember: La Práctica hace la Perfección.

7. Los Días - The Days

During this práctica, we will learn how to say the days of the week. Note that in Spanish, the days of the week are not capitalized, unless at the beginning of a sentence of course!

Use the two attached audios to listen to the correct pronunciations.

Once you’ve learned the days in Spanish, what about being able to prácticar the different parts of the day in Spanish?

Por la mañana - In the morning

Antes del almuerzo - Before lunch

Por mediodía - At noon

Por la tarde - In the afternoon

Por la noche - At night
